Builder-grade 3-tab shingles have no place on a Guild roof. The Guild standard calls for a minimum 30-year architectural (dimensional) shingle with a Class 4 impact resistance rating — the highest rating available under UL 2218 testing, and the threshold required to qualify for insurance discounts in most Texas counties. For homes in hail-heavy markets like Frisco, Southlake, and Flower Mound, we strongly advocate Class 4 products. For premium applications, we work with standing seam metal, stone-coated steel, clay tile, and concrete tile systems — materials engineered to outlast the insurance claim cycle.
Felt paper is the industry's most common underlayment. It works. It's also the minimum, and in Texas, minimum isn't good enough. The Guild standard calls for self-adhering ice-and-water shield on all eaves and valleys — not just felt — plus high-performance synthetic underlayment across the full roof deck. Before any new shingles go on, every Guild-affiliated contractor is expected to inspect the decking beneath for rot, delamination, soft spots, and improper spacing, and to replace compromised decking before recovering it. A $15,000 roof laid over a deteriorated deck is a re-roof in five years. We'd rather tell you that upfront.
This is the one. Poor attic ventilation is the single most common silent killer of Texas roofing systems, and it's the step most likely to be ignored on a low-bid job — because it's invisible once the job is done, and the damage takes years to show up on the shingles. What adequate ventilation actually means is a calculated balance between intake area (typically soffit vents) and exhaust area (typically ridge venting), sized to match the cubic footage of the attic space below. Without this balance, summer heat builds in the attic to 140°F or higher, cooking the shingles from the underside and voiding most manufacturer warranties. The Guild standard requires proper intake/exhaust calculation on every project and won't accept the "put in a ridge vent and call it done" shortcut that leaves intake starved. This is the difference between a roof that makes it to 30 years and one that's back on the schedule in 14.

A properly documented Class 4 impact-resistant system is the most defensible investment a Texas homeowner can make.
But hail is only part of the story.
These aren't theoretical risks. They're what Texas actually does to a roof. The Guild standard is built around them.
Texas summers run 90-plus days above 90°F in most of our markets, with peak temperatures regularly exceeding 100°F. Asphalt shingles absorb that heat — surface temperatures on a dark shingle in direct Texas sun can exceed 160°F. Every thermal cycle between day and night stresses the asphalt and accelerates oxidation. Class 4 shingles with SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modified asphalt are specifically engineered to handle thermal cycling better than standard shingles. Pair that with reflective underlayment and proper attic ventilation, and you extend system life measurably. Skip those elements, and you're on a 12-to-15-year replacement cycle instead of 25-to-30.
Texas severe thunderstorms routinely produce 60–80 mph straight-line winds, with supercell events pushing well beyond that. Shingle wind resistance depends almost entirely on how they're fastened. Code in most Texas jurisdictions calls for four nails per shingle in standard zones, but Guild contractors in high-wind areas install to the six-nail pattern that most manufacturers specify for enhanced wind resistance — and they nail in the nail strip, not below it, which is a common installation defect that reduces holding power dramatically.
Bellaire and the broader Houston market face a different category of wind risk: Gulf Coast tropical systems and the remnant bands from Gulf hurricanes. These events bring sustained high winds combined with horizontal, wind-driven rain that exploits any weakness in flashing, step flashing, or roof-to-wall transitions. Installation details that pass inspection in North Texas may not be adequate for a Houston coastal exposure. Houston's humidity is a roof's enemy in a different way than hail. Persistent moisture promotes the growth of gloeocapsa magma — the blue-black algae streaking visible on roofs across Houston suburbs — as well as mold in roofing materials and attic assemblies. Copper-containing granules in premium shingles inhibit algae growth significantly. Proper ventilation prevents the moisture accumulation in attic spaces that leads to mold on sheathing and structural members.
North Texas doesn't get sustained winters, but it gets flash freezes — rapid drops from 60°F to single digits over 24 hours. When snow or ice melts unevenly on a poorly ventilated roof, the meltwater refreezes at the eaves before it can drain, creating ice dams that force water under shingles and into the decking. Self-adhering ice-and-water shield at all eaves — not felt paper — is the correct preventive measure, and it's part of the Guild standard on every roof we touch.
